Rocket League’s AquaDome Update Coming This October

Psyonix’s latest update for Rocket League will take the series under the sea and into the AquaDome, and will be released this October.

In a recent blog post the developers stated that this update was inspired “by the seven seas, the creatures beneath the waves, and the machines we use to study both”. Players will now be able to rack up goals as sharks circle ahead and boost along transparent walls with a clear view of the coral reef below. The art-deco style and underwater setting are strongly reminiscent of Bioshock, a love letter to the series perhaps? The trailer seems to suggest so. Either way, AquaDome is the most visually striking of any area we’ve seen in the game so far.

This is the first arena released since Utopia Coliseum, and Psyonix have said to expect to see it a lot on all playlists. In addition Psyonix are also releasing two new cars, Triton and Proteus. Sleek and serpent-like, Triton looks like a futuristic submarine, whereas the robust Proteus is modelled after a research vessel. The arena is free but the cars will be priced individually at USD $1.99 per car. The update will also feature the musical stylings of Drunk Girl, confusedly a man by the name of Andy Hogarth. You can hear some of his work in the trailer.

Psyonix vice president Jeremy Dunham has stated that Rocket League will continue to expand over the course of 2016. To this end Psyonix have experimented with gameplay (replacing balls with pucks and nets with hoops) and added more cosmetic items and arenas. The developer also has ambitions to make Rocket League a true esports title by the end of the year.

AquaDome might be a few weeks away but we have the new Rumble mode to keep us occupied in the meantime. This mode throws ridiculous new powerups into the mix, such as a grappling hook to tether onto the ball in midair and a whirlwind that can suck up opponents and ball alike. Rumble is great fun, but we don’t doubt that Psyonix will be able to top it before the year is out.
